What to Do When Things Get Messy?

September 9, 2021 by Debra Kasowski Leave a Comment

“Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end”.

Robin sharma

Have you ever noticed when you attempt something new or you get a group of individuals together things get messy? Sometimes the starting point is disarray, other times it’s when people start integrating into the group where conflict and messiness occur. And, after you have been figuring things out through consistent action or working together focused on learning each other’s strengths – things seem to come together.

When I think of Robin Sharma’s quote, I think of when my children played hockey. The players come together in September – October, all with different skillsets. There are moments of frustration as they are waiting to receive a pass of the puck and the pass does not come or the pass comes and the play is whistled down. They seem out of sync. Over time, every year, through practices, games, and tournaments something magical happens. By February- March, we often see a cohesive team with the odd outlier. A team that can pull together, communicate with each, and celebrate the wins, and takes the losses together.

Another example I can share with you is baking in the kitchen. Do you remember mixing things up in the kitchen to bake a cake or some cookies? You get all these ingredients together and things can get messy. You need to make a mixture; pour it out or scoop it out into a pan. After baking it at the right temperature for the right amount of time, you get to see the cake or cookies evolve. Tasting is the best part.

Life can be messy as involves changes to the way we are used to doing things. There are so many things going on simultaneously that we are often not aware of. The best thing to do is to keep putting in the work and taking forward action. Learn as much can about the process and people. Explore your potential and expand your capacity. Give yourself time and grace in the process. Some things need to unfold at their own time. You can’t take the cookies out of the oven 5 minutes early and expect them to be complete and ready to eat. They may fall apart. You cannot put a new player on the team thinking your first game out that the team will immediately integrate and win.

Now, I am not saying it is not possible. Just know – when you get through the “messy”, amazing things can unfold.

“Motivation is what gets you started.
Habit is what keeps you going.” – Jim Rohn

Look around you, everything you have achieved or not achieved is a result of your choices and habits. If you do not like your results, it is time to change your habits and build success habits into your daily routines. You have good habits and bad habits – we all do. It is a matter of examining what habits are working for you and which habits are not. James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, says “every habit is just an obstacle to getting what you really want. Dieting is an obstacle to getting fit. Meditation is an obstacle to feel calm. Journaling is an obstacle to thinking clearly.” What do you want?

Keep an Open Mind. The thought of changing something may make you uneasy or anxious. Changes do not have to be big to make an impact. Small shifts in habits can lead to big results. The challenge of coaching adults is that they have deeply ingrained habitual ways of doing things. You have to put in a great deal of conscious effort such as writing with your non-dominant hand. It can feel awkward at the beginning. Change can happen, however, you must be open to possibility and change to get the results you want. You have to unlearn bad habits to learn and apply new good habits.

Changes do not have to be big to make an impact. Small shifts in habits can lead to big results. - Debra KasowskiClick To Tweet

Discover What You Want. It can often be challenging for people to come up with what they want for their results and outcome. You certainly know what you don’t want. Let’s start there and explore what it is you truly want. What are results or outcomes do you not want? Make a list. Now, reframe your responses to what you DO want. For example, you don’t want to feel tired and sluggish when you get up in the morning. What you really want is – to wake up well rested and energized for the day. By know what you do want, you can hit the ground running with developing night and morning routines that will get you excited and enthusiastic about your days.

Pay Attention to Your Language. Do you catch yourself saying “I have to do this…or that…” with a feeling of resentment even though you know you need to do it? Saying this can catch you in a cycle of procrastination and frustration. Why not reframe your language, “I get to…”? You will find evidence for whatever your thinking.

Choose the
mind-set you want. You may not believe it, however, there are many things you “get to do” that many other people wish they could do and can not. Someone who is bedridden would love the opportunity to walk a dog or take out the trash if they could. Someone who is trying to conceive would love to play with a child of their own. Often, what we think is a chore or an obstacle to getting things done or requires some effort another person would be willing to do it if they had the chance. Because you have the opportunity, you get to!

Make a Commitment. There is a difference between being interested in changing a habit and being committed to making a habit stick. If you are interested, chances are you will only do what you feel like doing when it is convenient for you. Whereas, the person who is committed, they will do what they need to do even when they do not feel like it because they are focused on the results and outcome they want to achieve.

Focus on the Benefits.
Reframe your habits by highlighting their rewards. By doing so, you make the habit more appealing! Let’s say you get nervous or “have a case of the butterflies” when you are about to speak in front of a group of people. Reframe the nervousness into, “I am going to move my butterflies into a formation and use this energy to fuel my passion for the topic I am speaking on.” Shifting and reprogramming your thinking into the positive.

Be Patient with Yourself. Changing a habit is one thing. Making it stick is another. Changing a habit requires that you make a decision. Once you make the decision, you are half way to accomplishing it. Pick one habit you would like to change or improve on. Work on this habit until you succeed before working on another habit. Otherwise, you will have spilt focus and may feel overwhelmed. Experts have said it takes 21 days to change or create a new habit. It takes about 66 days to make the habit stick and become a part of your routines.

Get started – NOW.
In Gretchen Rubin’s book, Better than Before: What I Learned About Making and Breaking Habits – To Sleep More, Quit Sugar, Procrastinate Less, And Generally Build a Happier Life, she says, “The desire to start something at the “right” time is usually just a delay for justification. In almost every case, the best time to start is now.” There is no RIGHT time. Go do it! Adjust the course as you take action. Time is wasted when you do nothing.

Connect Your New Habit to a Current Habit. It is easier to make a habit stick when you connect your new habit to something you are already doing. Let’s say you want to save time and eat healthy. You buy your groceries on Sunday. You can do you food preparation, plan, and make your meals for the week because the food is there and ready and available. Make it easy and appealing! Automatic.

Schedule Your Habit into Your Calendar. Studies have shown that you are more likely to do something when you write it down. Make the commitment to yourself! Positive results come from consistently doing what works! Plus, now that it is in the calendar, you do not have to think about it, you can move to taking action!

Track Your Habits.
You can only adjust and change things if you know whether or not they are working. What gets measured will get managed. Monitor your habits – write down your results. Keep what you are wanting to do top of mind. Otherwise, you know the saying, “out of sight, out of mind.”

Change Your Environment. You may consider changing up your environment to eliminate distractions or provide a fresh perspective. When I was writing my book, Let’s Be Curious, I seconded myself to the university library for evenings at a time. This way I was not distracted by dishes piled in the kitchen sink or the dryer buzzing to let me know it was finished. You may consider designing your space with accessories or motivational sayings to keep you mentally on top of your game.

Eliminate the Cues of a Bad Habit. In Atomic Habits, James Clear explains, “Eliminate the cue and your habit will never start. Reduce the craving and you won’t have the motivation to act. Make the behaviours difficult and you won’t be able to do it.” You may want to quit eating sugary foods. In order to eliminate the cues, you would take the cookies and sweets out of the pantry. Make them invisible and you won’t crave them. For those people who are wanting to cut down on their retail therapy or credit card use, they may freeze their credit cards in the freezer making it difficult to access and use. In delaying the craving, you may realize you didn’t need to spend or want the item you were buying anyway.

Start slow, in increments of time, as the running programs do. Run for a 1-minute walk for a minute and repeat. Soon enough you will be running for 5 minutes and walking for 1 minute and repeat. With consistency and practice, your performance will improve. Your habits work the same way.

Don’t get caught up in worrying about what others will say and do about your new habits. You are doing them for you. When you make the changes you want to make, the world around you will adjust. People may decide to change the habit of their own.

A few of the top success habits are:
• Waking up early and having a morning routine.
• Writing out the things you are grateful for.
• Eating a healthy breakfast.
• Reading for 30 minutes a day.
• Exercising for 30-60 minutes a day.
• Scheduling out your day and habits.
• Motivating yourself with a podcast or video.
• Budgeting and tracking expenses.
• Learning something new every day.
• Being organized.
• Contributing to others.
• Being resourceful.
• Getting ample rest.
• Journaling your thoughts.
• Enjoying “me” time.

“We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Aristotle

What habit do you want to change or implement? Schedule it in your day and it will be automatic in no time!

Episode 154 – Refuse to Make Excuses

Have you ever noticed that there are people who are committed to their goals and then there are people interested? The people who are committed are super focused on what they need to do and who they need to connect with. You can always pick out the people who are interested because they are the ones who find excuses or “reasons” that prevent them from reaching their goals.

Do you recognize some of these excuses for not being able to take action?

  • The weather (hot, cold, windy, snowy)
  • No money
  • Don’t know enough.
  • Not __________ enough.
  • No time
  • The Economy is bad. (or good)
  • No education.
  • No one values me.
  • Self-taught.
  • I don’t have the right outfit.
  • Bad Childhood.
  • Good childhood.
  • They were there first.
  • Today is not a good day…and neither is tomorrow.

I know you may be laughing to yourself because I am certain you have heard some of these excuses. You will always find excuses or rationale to support your decisions if you look for them.

“When you master the power of self-discipline, you will NEVER make excuses for making progress.” – Brian Tracy

You need to get started by taking action steps toward your goals. Self-discipline comes with putting habits in place that serve you in reaching your goals. Habits become routines. Some people get bored or frustrated with repetition but repetition is what creates consistency. Consistency leads to mastery. Mastery leads to results. What happens is people are short-sighted, they want results now. Early gratification is NOT sustainable; however, small wins along the way builds momentum.

Self-discipline and strong success habits assist you in resisting excuses. Excuses often show up because you may realize that what you wanted requires effort and determination. You get focused on the penalties or pain of doing something versus the rewards or pleasure of gaining what you say you want and more. If you put the energy you put into making excuses into putting in the effort into what you need to get done, you would be farther ahead than you are now.

Excuses tell the world – you do NOT care about your goals as much as you say you do. Drop the excuses. They are NOT serving you. Excuses prevent you from getting ahead.

What are you afraid of? Dig deeper.

Challenge your excuses…challenge the important of your goals.

What does it mean to you NOT to achieve your goal?

What will it mean to achieve it?

Remember everyone who has succeeded before you started at the bottom and worked their way to the top. The fact they can do it means you can do it too.

They didn’t let the weather stop them. They tapped into resources and found money or earned it. They learned new skills and developed them. They committed to continuous learning. They blocked time off in their schedule to work on their goals. They learned that they did not need validation from others they needed to value themselves. Their childhood was in the past and they have control of the present and they can create their future with developing a new story. And, the best day to go after your goals is TODAY!

Stop holding out on yourself!

Make your goals a reality!

NO EXCUSES! YOUR COMMITMENT NEEDS TO BE STRONGER THAN YOUR EXCUSES.

EPISODE 153 – Reverse Engineer Your Success

Vision is the picture you have in your mind of what you want to achieve. I learned early on in my quest of achievement to reverse engineer my plans to get the success I wanted. The exercise of working from your vision to where you are now will help you create the roadmap you need to get to where you want to go from where you are right now. Most people will share the vision of what they want to achieve but very few will write out a description in detail through reverse engineering the plan. The steps to success are simple. We tend to complicate things, thinking what we are ding needs many more steps or extras.

Reflect and Project

Hindsight is 20/20. You are in the Present. The future is all you can see. You have been successful in other areas of your life, business, or career path. You have a system in which you do things naturally. Take time to reflect on your past successes. What did you do to achieve what you achieved? What is the most common factor in your successes? Now, look at where you want to go now. Who do you need to show up as? Who do you need to be? What do you need to have? What do you need to do to be it or achieve it? You need to gain clarity and understand where you are going before you can reverse engineer a plan.

Act and Fail Often

Learning experiences are many when you take action. You have made mistakes or failed. These are learning experiences. Do not beat yourself up. Do not dwell on it. What was the lesson? What do you need to change or continue doing? What do you need to stop? Our best learning opportunities are the ones where we have risked being rejected, feeling ashamed or embarrassed, or have failed. If you had never taken the step, you would never have known what you are capable of. Guess what? You are still here! You need to go at it again in a new way! Remember to reflect, adjust, act, and repeat!

Find a Role Model

Success leaves clues. Who has done what you want to do? Find a mentor or hire a coach to help you identify the steps you need to get to where you want to go. Learn from others to see what actions you need to be taking to get to where you want to go. Ask what they did to achieve success. You may not be as far off from success as you think. You do not have to have all the resources in the world to be successful. You need to learn what resources you have available and leverage or activate them when needed.

Map It Out

Grab your post it notes, flip chart paper, and markers and create a visual of what you want to achieve. Mind map what will be required and where you can get it. You may need to ask someone for ideas. By getting it out of your head onto paper, you can establish the emotional connection to what you want to achieve.

Uncover Your WHY

As you reverse engineer or forward-backward plan, determine why the end goal important to you? Establishing the emotional connection – your “WHY” is important in getting you to move forward when you are faced with challenges. Many people get caught up in the how versus focusing on the why and they lose their emotional connection to the vision they wanted.

Reverse engineer your success and use the drive for your WHY to help you get to your destination. Keep the roadmap simple.

EPISODE 152 – The Probability of Success

March 7, 2018 by Debra Kasowski Leave a Comment

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0KwdU8m_eg[/embedyt]

“Keep trying; failures increase the probability of success.”
―
Ken Poirot

Life is like a game of chance. The more chances or opportunities you take, the more you increase your chances of being successful. Those chances and opportunities are the actions you take toward what you want to accomplish. If you focus on the probability of being successful versus the possibilities around you, you may lose faith. If you focus on what is possible, the opportunities to succeed will be endless. There is more than one way to achieve success.

There are 9 key indicators that will increase your probability of success:

Possess a Positive Attitude. You can choose to be positive or be negative. The choice is yours. Your attitude is dictated by your inner dialogue. Do you encourage yourself and give yourself praise and say “Right On!”? The attitude you carry with you throughout the day is what keeps you motivated during tough times. It is how you reframe situations and look for the silver lining – the good. What attitude do you choose?

Stay Open-Minded. A person who is open-minded is able to look for possibilities and is open to new ideas without judgment or finding fault. They see suggested strategies as a hand up to success. When you are open, the strategies you are searching for will appear.

Growth Mindset – A person with a growth mindset knows how to learn from adversity and mistakes. They know that the way to grow is to do new things and adjust their course as needed. Become an insatiable reader and learner. Do you have a growth mindset?

Willingness to Ask. Asking questions is a way to gain information. A person who is driven to succeed with risk looking foolish and ask a question. It is the quest to have the information they need to make powerful decisions. Turn your questions into your quest!

Create Your Inner Circle. Successful people know that they become the average of the people they spend the most time with. They end up having the same average of income, do the same average of activities, and become like the people they surround themselves with. If the people you surround yourself with are positive and driven, you will become positive and driven to. If the people you surround yourself with are big spenders and engulfed in debt…you may become too. Pay attention to who you surround yourself with. Your influences are more powerful than you realize.

Focused on Clear Compelling Vision. Success is determined by having a clear compelling vision which you are drawn to. You know what it is you want and you go for it.

Intentional Plan. Planning and preparation get you closer to your goal. You use the vision to drive the plan. You can feel your success is right around the corner.

Take Calculated Risks. Risk is nothing more than a challenge. When you assess your risk by doing some research and your due diligence, you reduce the risk. You can be prepared for challenges that arise because you took the time to evaluate the risk and what the impact could be. Therefore, you can take actions to minimize the risk involved and make solid decisions.

Consistent Action Taker. Consistent action is important in maintaining momentum and motivation. It is all of these actions that are going to increase your odds. You know “if there is a will, there is a way.” You will find a way to achieve success.

Your probability of achieving success is zero with no action. Action increases the odds. Success is not by chance it comes from consistent efforts.

What are you doing to increase the probability of your success?
