What to Do When Things Get Messy?

September 9, 2021 by Debra Kasowski Leave a Comment

“Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end”.

Robin sharma

Have you ever noticed when you attempt something new or you get a group of individuals together things get messy? Sometimes the starting point is disarray, other times it’s when people start integrating into the group where conflict and messiness occur. And, after you have been figuring things out through consistent action or working together focused on learning each other’s strengths – things seem to come together.

When I think of Robin Sharma’s quote, I think of when my children played hockey. The players come together in September – October, all with different skillsets. There are moments of frustration as they are waiting to receive a pass of the puck and the pass does not come or the pass comes and the play is whistled down. They seem out of sync. Over time, every year, through practices, games, and tournaments something magical happens. By February- March, we often see a cohesive team with the odd outlier. A team that can pull together, communicate with each, and celebrate the wins, and takes the losses together.

Another example I can share with you is baking in the kitchen. Do you remember mixing things up in the kitchen to bake a cake or some cookies? You get all these ingredients together and things can get messy. You need to make a mixture; pour it out or scoop it out into a pan. After baking it at the right temperature for the right amount of time, you get to see the cake or cookies evolve. Tasting is the best part.

Life can be messy as involves changes to the way we are used to doing things. There are so many things going on simultaneously that we are often not aware of. The best thing to do is to keep putting in the work and taking forward action. Learn as much can about the process and people. Explore your potential and expand your capacity. Give yourself time and grace in the process. Some things need to unfold at their own time. You can’t take the cookies out of the oven 5 minutes early and expect them to be complete and ready to eat. They may fall apart. You cannot put a new player on the team thinking your first game out that the team will immediately integrate and win.

Now, I am not saying it is not possible. Just know – when you get through the “messy”, amazing things can unfold.

Do You Know The Difference Between Change and Transition?

September 6, 2021 by Debra Kasowski Leave a Comment

“Change is situational. Transition, on the other hand, is psychological. It is not those events but rather the inner reorientation or self-redefinition that you have to go through in order to incorporate any of those changes into your life. Without a transition, a change is just a rearrangement of the furniture. Unless transition happens, the change won’t work.”

William Bridges

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “change” is “to make different in some particular (alter); to make radically different”. You can rearrange the furniture. You can repaint a room. Change the clothing you are wearing. The change you experience is visual. Change is also defined as “to undergo a transformation, transition, or substitution”. To transition, requires you to switch gears, think differently which leads you to feel differently impacting your actions and the results/outcomes you receive.

As a change management practitioner, it is of key importance for people to become aware and understand the need for change and how it impacts them before there is a desire to be part of the change. People become confident with change when they have the knowledge and ability to navigate it. What creates the “sticking” power of change? The “sticking” power of change comes from the ability to reinforce the changes made by putting in strategies or measures to maintain the changes.

Whether it be moving from the office to work from home or from home to going back to the office, mindset matters. There is a psychological change or shift that must occur. New expectations, new ways of going about your day, new habits and routines that need to be put in place to adjust to a new “norm”. Resistance to change is understandable; it’s uncomfortable. It’s new. With every change or decision, the world around you will adjust.

Recently, my son moved out of the home to go to University. A big transition, for him, myself, and my whole family. I cannot tell you tears were not shed. There is a change in geography. The transition to being an independent young adult and what that meant for me as a mother is one of pride and one that requires re-orientation – defining myself in a new way. A way that allows my son to expand into who he needs to be and who I also need to be.

We can ask ourselves – “Do we want to choose to fear the change or transition or is there a way we can embrace it?”

It’s about being able to shift gears and finding a new meaning we give to the transition.

Tap Into Your Authentic Power

September 4, 2021 by Debra Kasowski Leave a Comment

“Authentic power is building something inside you that you cannot lose and that no one can take from you.”

GARY ZUKAV

I had the pleasure of spending the day with my son, helping him move into his dorm room, and getting those extra items (snacks and drinks) to make his new space feel like home. Times of transition…I know he will be successful in whatever he chooses. I only ask myself, where has the time gone.

As I sit at my AirBnb, I am reflecting on my day. I was flipping through channels and an episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show from 2000 with Gary Zukav caught my attention. The show was about how you can get your power back. There are events in our lives that can sideswipe us or give us a whisper of warning to pay attention to. Gary Zukav was talking about how people strive for perfection, acquire material things, or accomplishments, in order, to manipulate the perception of others to like them or see them in a certain light. There is nothing wrong with having nice things for your own pleasure or doing things to discover what you are capable of. It is when you pursue these things in hopes that others will see you in a particular way that you fall out of alignment with who you are. The difference lies in “who you are being” not “what you are obtaining or accomplishing”. It is not the bigger house, the fancy car, or any other flashy toys that define who you are.

Stop and ask yourself, “Why do I choose what I am doing (competitions, fancy cars, or retail therapy)? Am I doing this to fill a void (feeling of inadequacy, unloved)? A need to feel worthy? To look like I have it all together? To prove it to others who have wronged you? To look good? Explore your responses they will help you answer the next question.

The ultimate question is, “How do you view yourself in relationship to the world?” The belief you choose to hold will drive your intentions and actions and lead to your results.

There are 4 characteristics that define someone who has authentic power:

  1. Humbleness – A person who is humble sees people around them as friends and knows that everyone in life faces difficulties and challenges. Why would you abandon someone who only longs for the same thing – to be loved, valued, and acceptance.
  2. Forgiveness – to forgive for not other reason that release the burden on yourself; forgiveness is for you more than the other person.
  3. Clarity – to understand that every experience is suited for you
  4. Love – to realize that every person who cries hurts. A connection to the human spirit.

Authentic power is the ability to go within – to experience the emotions and to make choices from within – intentionally moment to moment.

Are you ready to step into your authentic power? No one can take this away from you. Everyone has access to this power!

It starts with one choice.
