In this podcast, I talk about challenging your excuses – everyone has made an excuse at one time or another. Many of the excuses made come from fear, disinterest, and not wanting to accept responsibility or the truth. Excuses are used for short-term gain – “relief” from the situation but can hurt your performance and opportunities long term. Ask yourself about the excuses you have made, we tend to recognize them in hindsight. What are you settling for? Excuses keep people in mediocrity.

“If there is anything in your life that is not the way you want it to be, you and only you are responsible for changing it. You must believe that it is up to you to create solutions to the challenges of life. Whether they are big or small, you’re still responsible. Each time you give an excuse, you diminish your respect, your credibility, and your integrity. Each time you make an excuse, you reinforce your propensity to make even more excuses in the future, and excuse making becomes a habit.”  – Tommy Newberry

What is your definition of success? Some people define success with money and power, whereas others focus on health or relationships. The definition of success is personal. It is more than just a goal or dream. It is a way of being and doing. Success is not about perfection or having the most things. Success is whatever you believe it to be – it is a state of mind.

To achieve the success, you hold in your mind, you will have to set yourself up for success by working on yourself and developing success habits. When you develop success habits, you can create opportunities and you can capitalize on them. One of the most common self-limiting beliefs regarding success is that “Success is temporary” or “gifted an opportunity, bestowed a privilege they would not normally get, or that they were in the right place and the right time. Another group of people may say, success comes down to the amount of effort you put in which will equate to the result you get in return. At the end of the day, it comes down to being intentional with your choices. The choices you make today will impact your outcomes for better or worse.

Too many people would rather hold onto the ordinary or stay in their comfort zones than stretch and grow. It is safe. They worry about what others will say or do. You may hesitate to follow through on your passions because if you take lead, you may become a target. A target in the sense that people may talk about you or want to sabotage your success because of their own fears. What others believe show not matter to you; they are dealing

Good things don’t last.” People fear that whatever blessing or gift they receive that it will be fleeting.

Every person who encounters a successful person has a theory about what has made them a success. Some people will tell you that they have created their own luck, they have been with their own thoughts, feelings, and triggers. Eleanor Roosevelt said, “You must do the things you think you cannot do.” Trust that everything with work out exactly how it is meant to be.

To achieve the success you desire, you must prepare and plan for your day.

Save time and energy on your decision making. Steve Jobs wore the same style T-shirt and jeans every day. He did this to reduce decision fatigue. You can reduce some of the decisions you face in your day.

Establish a Routine. Establish a consistent morning or nightly routine involving: meditation, prayer, journaling, and visualization.

Plan Ahead for the Next Day. Gather the things you need for the next day. Have everything ready. Lay your clothing out. Pack a lunch and snacks if required. Make sure your vehicle is filled with gas. Plan your errands to save time and money.

Set Your Priorities. Use a system to set aside projects that are not a high priority. Set yourself with success! Identify what is most important. Block time to work on what matters most. Set aside the time you need to catch someone on the act. Prioritize your workload. Take time to focus what is most.

Decide to Dress for Success. Many people get comfortable with their clothing and appearance. Dress for how you want to be seen and viewed in the world. Whether we like it or not, people make judgments and first impressions before we even say hello! Make it count!

Make Your Bed. If you do nothing else and you have made your bed, then you have been productive.

Track Your Expenses and/or Where Your Time is Spent. When you pay attention to where your resources are used, you can start being mindful of how you spend your money or time.

There are many more success habits that step you up to be the best version of yourself.

What are your habits of success? Comment below.

EPISODE 136 – Stop! No Excuses Allowed

“Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.” George Washington Carver

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01VG9oPn56w[/embedyt]

One habit you are going to want to break free from is the habit of making excuses. Excuses are the long litany of reasons or rationale as to why you did not take action or do what you said you were going to do. Excuses defend your behaviours. When you fall on excuses, you are avoiding taking ownership of your life and responsibility for the outcomes and results that you want to get. It always seems to be someone else’s fault why they are not getting the success that they want. They play the victim. They often claim that their situation is different and no one understands what they are going through. Excuses are a way of avoiding reality and looking in the mirror.

Does this sound like you? If you catch yourself making excuses, STOP right there.

Do you want different results?

Yes!

You need to take 100% responsibility for your results. No excuses allowed.

You will find a way to figure it out. If you need to ask for help, you will ASK!

The excuses you are making tend to be due to FEAR!

Yes, that’s right. FEAR and there is a pay off for not taking action.

Some of the most common fears are:

  • Fear of Success
  • Fear of Failure
  • Fear of Rejection
  • Fear of Uncertainty
  • Fear of Responsibility
  • Fear of Change

Your fears hold you back from what you really want. If you allow your fears to hold you hostage, you cannot experience success. Your passion for what you want needs to be greater than you fear to step into your potential. When your fear is greater than your passion, you will make bad judgments, lack the self confidence to take responsibility to take charge of your life and may even live with regrets.

Start by taking a look at the excuses you have been making. What are they?

Not sure, listen to these excuse starters…

“I don’t have enough time…”

“I do not have enough education OR I am not smart enough.”

“It’s not the right time.”

“I don’t feel like it…OR I am not inspired to do it.”

”I do not know how to get started… OR how to do it”

“I am too old or too young.”

“I do not have the money.”

Challenge your excuses! Are you making excuses or do you have a REAL reason for something not turning out as you wished?

We all have the same amount of time in a day; it all depends on how you allocate the time you have available.

You can learn new information by researching and reading, watching YouTube Videos, taking a course, and asking others who already know how to do what you want to do.

Where do you prioritize your money? There is a tendency to focus your money where you feel is most important. Can you find a way to change the priorities assigned to your money?

When you feel its not the right time, you will note that there is a lack of resources, information, or confidence in your abilities.

When age is the excuse, it is due to a lack of confidence.

Whether you feel like it or not, you need to do it, Otherwise, you will always have a reason for not getting the results you want.

Focus on the here and now! What is in your control? You cannot change the past.

Stop comparing your situation to others. Don’t worry about what others are doing. Everyone is on their own journey and has different passions. Avoid comparing your situation or circumstance with others.

Focus on the solutions and opportunities in front of you and coming your way.

Look at your situation from different perspectives before making a decision.

Tap into your strengths. You are more talented and capable than you give yourself credit for.

You will find a way! No excuses allowed!

Excuses do not allow you to move ahead or grow in the process.

“If you have passion, there is no need for excuses because your enthusiasm will trump any negative reasoning you might come up with. Enthusiasm makes excuses a nonissue.” Wayne Dyer

Episode 81 – Embracing Accountability

“Each day you are leading by example. Whether you realize it or not or whether it’s positive or negative, you are influencing those around you.”
― Rob Liano

Too many people think no one is watching them so they think, “What does it matter if I cut corners or spend extra time on my cellphone versus working on a project or going to visit a new customer?” Who will notice? You should! Accountability begins with you. You may take it for granted and people may not tell you but they do pay attention to what you do and what you do not do. You can’t expect hold others accountable if you cannot hold yourself accountable first.

What is Accountability?

Accountability, in its simplest terms, is doing what you say you are going to do. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, accountability is “an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions.” Being accountable means you are taking 100 percent responsibility for your results – good or bad. When you are accountable, you make the decision to “own” your part in a situation versus playing the victim of circumstance. The victim mindset is one of complaining, blaming, and making excuses as to why others are responsible for your results or lack of results – you are disowning it!

“Accountability breeds response-ability.” – Stephen Covey

I think people get afraid of being held accountable because the fear the consequences. I like to think by holding myself accountable for my actions I am holding myself to a higher standard to better myself. When you hold yourself accountable for your actions without placing blame on others, you have raised the bar. You will more intentional with your approach to things to get the desired results.

Why Do People Avoid Accountability?

There are many reasons that you might avoid being held accountable. One reason might be “blame”. It doesn’t feel good when someone blames you for the results achieved. You do not want to be the reason why something did not turn out the way to was anticipated. The second reason is the fear of failure. Too many of us get caught up in worrying about what other people are thinking and saying about us. You may be afraid of failing. In most situations, the world as you know it will not end. What matters is that you take time to review what went wrong and learn from your mistakes to hopefully do better in the future. The third reason is the fear of success. What happens to those who take accountability? They are often given more responsibility because these are the people who get things done or make things happen. They are held to a higher standard and have higher expectations of their performance. Growth comes with success and taking on more responsibility. As you reach one level, you are challenged with new opportunities to help you learn and growth.

Why Don’t We Hold People Accountable?

Sometimes I think people don’t hold others accountable because it involves having an uncomfortable conversation or that they may not be liked. Trouble is, if you do not deal with it as soon as possible it can have a significant impact on your team members. Your star performers will be the ones picking up the pieces. You will end up lowering the standard or bar because you know that they will not deliver on what is expected of them just to keep peace. What does that solve? It ends up festering division in your team and lowering the performance level of the person you should be holding accountable.

How Do We Start Making Accountability a Priority?

You start making accountability a priority when you can communicate a clear vision as to what you want to achieve. It is important to define roles and expectations so people have something to measure their progress by. Set a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely) goals. This way you have something to measure your progress by. Remember what gets measured gets managed. It also gives us something to aim towards. Otherwise, how would you know if you achieved it or not. Make sure those around you know what accountability means to you and that it is not about consequences versus ownership. Are you able to police yourself and take the actions you need to even if no one is watching?

Why Should You Be Accountable?

You need to recognize that you have more power over your circumstances than you give yourself credit for. You cannot change the past; what happened in the past is in the past. We can all think about all the things we could have done, should have done, or would have done. What are you going to do today to create your best day and set yourself up for a brighter future?

Accountability is about “owning it” instead of letting circumstances own you. When you follow through on what you say you are going to do, you are being accountable. You become seen as a leader or role model. Being accountable for your choices and actions is about being dependable and reliable which also makes you trustworthy. You also boost your credibility in the marketplace.  You will never be recognized for all the great things you do in life if you do not put yourself out there to learn what you are capable of being, doing, or having. By choosing to be accountable, you will be more focused and intentional with the action you take as you know that every choice makes an impact as to whether you are getting closer to your goal.

Set expectations for yourself of what you wish to achieve and by when. Block off time for the items on your to-do list in a calendar. A running list of to do items does not have a timeline so you may be continuously adding to the list. If you want things to get done, put it in the calendar. Don’t overschedule yourself. It is okay to so say “no” when you are focused on getting what you need done.

I have heard too many excuses from people like it has been a life long problem…if so in the words of Dr. Phil…how is that working for you? Stop right now and choose to own what you can do something about. No more excuses! Businesses and organizations are looking for someone who will embrace accountability to get desired results.

Are you up to the challenge? Opportunities open for those who are accountable for their actions.
