3 Ways to Visionary Leaders Can Engage Their Teams in Their Vision

February 9, 2018 by Debra Kasowski Leave a Comment

Visionary leaders are creatives by nature. You’ll notice that if you are a visionary leader that your mind goes off with ideas like fireworks at the county fair. You can see the vision in your mind, you can feel the excitement of the vision coming together in your body, and you believe it is possible to make your vision a reality. However, not all visionary leaders can get their teams to buy-in to your vision. Have you ever had a leader that had trouble explaining their vision? They can tell you what the final outcome can be but they can’t always explain how to get the destination. Visionary leaders need to engage their teams to fulfill the vision.

Write Out Your Compelling Vision. Get it out of your head and onto paper. You have tons of ideas battling for your attention and focus at any one time. Ideas can be grand but also fleeting so it is important to capture those ideas onto paper as soon as possible. Inking the vision onto paper helps you think about the vision and not miss a detail. Writing out your vision and goals helps you clarify your ideas.

Communicate Your Vision to Your Team. Be descriptive as possible. Remember you can see the vision clearly in your mind. People are not mind readers. Your team all learn in different ways. Some people need to see the vision. Using diagram, images, or models can help describe the vision. Others are auditory so explaining your vision in vivid detail with help them create the picture in their mind. Sensory learners learn by touch and kinesthetic learn by action to reinforce the learning. Most people have a combination of all four. Clearly communicating your vision reveals a roadmap as to where you are heading. It can act as a filter to ensure your team is “paddling” in the same direction versus chasing ideas that are not in aligned with your vision.

“Vision is the art of what is invisible to others.” Jonathan Swift

Engage Your Team by Asking Open-Ended Questions. Discover who the planners and implementers are on your team. These individuals are the ones who can see the vision and know how to make the vision a reality. What do they think about the vision? What would it take to make this vision a reality? What opportunities exist that can be leveraged? Your team members want to be engaged in meaningful and engaging work. What does making this vision a reality do for others? Allow them to be part of your vision and they will be your champions. Ensure that you check in at milestones to celebrate with them and see your vision unfold.

We need visionaries to inspire creative ideas and solutions. Visionaries can struggle from time to time in making the vision become a reality because the can see it in their minds but they have trouble articulating it to others. By writing out the vision, communicating the vision, and engaging your team in the vision, you will gain clarity, new ideas, and buy-in from your team. If any member of your team is paddling in a different direction, you will face resistance and may even head in a different direction should any other team members join them.

Share your compelling vision regularly. Ask questions regularly. Engage the right team members. Ensure they are paddling in the same direction. Lead them to your vision.

Meet Our Guest:

Teresa Spinelli wasn’t destined to lead her family’s grocery business. But life takes
many turns and the leader is what she became.

Born in Edmonton in 1961 Teresa grew up at the Italian Centre Shop, taking her first
steps in the pasta isle. By age 13 she was working in the store regularly as a cashier,
never dreaming she would one day ascend to the Presidency of the company. In 1983
after successfully graduating from the University of Alberta with a psychology degree
her plan was to pursue social work, though admittedly realized social work wasn’t for
her after completing a work term. “I realized I’d be a horrible social worker because I
wanted to take everybody home with me.”

Family misfortune changed the course of Teresa’s life with the loss of her brother,
followed by the passing of her father, Frank Spinelli three years later. “We were a
traditional Italian family, and I had a brother, so automatically, because he was the boy,
he was going to take the business.” In 2000 Teresa stepped in as the president of the
company temporarily; the company having 30 employees and a net worth of 9 million.
Teresa believed the Italian Centre had the potential to be bigger and better.
With her vision of changing the business from a local grocery store to a major importer
and distributor, within a year, she grew the business to 12 million in sales. Today, the
Company has grown 8 times with 4 stores (located in Edmonton and Calgary), 509
employees and sales of 64 million.

Married to Mike Newberry in 1999, and blessed with son Massimo in 2007 Teresa’s
business philosophy comes from her dad, “The more you give, the more you get.” Her
passion is revitalizing the McCauley community around Little Italy in Edmonton’s
downtown and volunteering with such organizations as the Italian Chamber of
Commerce; Mayor’s Task Force on Sustainable Communities, and Edmonton City
Manager’s Advisory Committee. For Teresa, it’s all about people and showing them you
love them with a hearty, bountiful meal.

“For me, it’s not about selling salami. For me, it’s about people. The reason I get up in
the morning is because I want to grow people.” – Teresa Spinelli

Among her notable awards for 10-years running, Teresa has been one of Canada’s Top
100 Women Entrepreneurs as ranked by Profit Magazine; the People’s Choice
Businesswoman of the Year; and has received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in
recognition of contributions to Canada.

EPISODE 120 – Creative Ways to Attract the Right Customers

“I attract a crowd, not because I’m an extrovert or I’m over the top or I’m oozing with charisma. It’s because I care.”

Gary Vaynerchuk

An entrepreneur does not make money without attracting the right customers to pay for it. There is more to attracting the right customer than focusing on your profit. Profit is a measure of the value you provide for others. When you are first starting out you may think you need to work with anyone who is willing to pay you. Wrong! This decision can cost you time and energy – the money will not be worth it. You may even be chasing them to pay you. Do you want that hassle? Why not attract the right customers for your business?

Know WHO your customer is. One of the most important position tools in business is to know WHO you customer or avatar is. Do you work with men or women or both? Do you have a specific age range of your ideal customer is? Are they married or single? With Children? Pets? What job, career, or business do they have? What are their needs? The more you know about your customer (avatar) the more you will know about providing the best solution. Learn where they shop, dine, or network. What are their likes or dislikes? What charities or causes are they passion about? Find out what their needs are right now. Listen carefully to what drives them and even annoys them. Discover a way to help! You can have more than one customer type or avatar.

Position Yourself as the Answer – Showcase your expertise by writing articles, commenting on blogs, becoming a guest blogger, and speaking at local events or conferences. Let people experience you through video, written word, or podcasting to get to know, like, and trust you. Most people do not buy the first time they meet you.

Get Out There – Back Away from the Computer! You have heard the saying, “Like attracts like.” Be the example! Go and live life! Go to the gym, get on the golf course, or volunteer and the road race or art gallery event. Do you! Do the things you are passionate about. Be curious about people, ask questions, and learn about them. People will be attracted to the energy, enthusiasm, and the passion you have in life. They will say to themselves, “I would like some of that.” No different than magazine ads or TV commercial. They sell the feeling – “What will you feel like if your have this product or service?”

Open the Conversation. Follow up with the people you meet to continue the conversation to build rapport and trust. They are not the only ones determining whether they like, know, and trust you but you should be doing this as well. It was Theodore Roosevelt who said, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”. What is frustrating or irritating them right now? What are their needs or pain points? What can you offer as a solution? What ways do you let prospects know what you offer? As you start learning more and deepening the conversations, you can do many unique things to attract the right customers who will resonate what you are offering.

Depending on the type of industry you are in, consider the following creative ways to attract the right customers:

Support a local artist or someone on Etsy to design a special thank you or follow up card for your business.

Do a Facebook Live Video and draw for a free book for all those who, like, comment, or share your video.

Sponsor a sports team or an award.

Offer a scholarship.

Put your customers in your marketing with testimonials, videos, or pictures of them with or using the product.

Give away your BEST stuff! Share your articles, interviews, or videos.

Send articles that are relevant to a conversation you had with someone you met.

Offer to demo your product or service.

Collaborate with complementary services. You are partnering up or cross promoting with individuals who are not your competition but complement the work that you do. For example, a blind installation company may consider connecting with a window installation company or a window cleaning company or someone in interior design.

Use creative software applications to create stunning attention grabbing social media posts like Canva or PicMonkey.

Send out a Warm Letter letting people know what you are up to.

Ask for referrals or offer a free gift or bonus for every qualified lead that does business with you.

Offer a free e-book or write a blog post specific to common themes your avatar faces.

Get creative and create curiosity about around your offer. Pique their interest. People will want to learn and do business with you.
