EPISODE 31: The Knowing and Doing Gap

Many of us know what to do but fall short on doing what we know we need to do. The difference between knowing and doing is that in knowing-what you believe to be true and is based on the knowledge and experience you have. Whereas, doing is about the actions you take based on the knowledge and experiences you have.

The gap between knowing and doing can be small as dime or as large as the universe. We filter the world through what we believe-what we know. Our perception is our reality. It does not mean it is always correct. Have you ever made an assumption and realized that you are totally wrong?

id-10087374Doing means taking action – it means taking a risk. Why is it that so many of us know what to do but do not do it? You are operating from a place of fear. You’re scared to take risks because you scared to step out of that comfort zone. The comfort that you believe will protect and keep you from harm. It is a human need to feel safe and secure. You can take calculated risks. Calculated risks are where you have done your homework and decreased the risk, and lessened the uncertainty. And most of all minimized your fears.

  1. Conduct Research– Get more information by surfing the web or reading articles or magazines or books in the area that you need more information.
  2. Ask Questions. Interview someone who has been where you want to be or has the knowledge that you are seeking.
  3. Challenge Assumptions. Challenge others assumptions because the best way is not always the way things have been done. Encourage people to look for better ways of doing things and exploring more perspectives and options.
  4. Learn Best by Doing. Take small actions. Learn and adjust as you go. Learn from mistakes and experiences.

Knowing is one thing. Talking the talk. Walking the talk means that you are acting based on what you know. Talking is not the same as taking action. Talking may make you make you look smart; however, acting and doing will give you the results that demonstrate you are truly smart.

The biggest gap between knowing and doing is procrastination. As you may know what to do, this means not hesitate on taking actions. The reason for this is sometimes you don’t realize the impact on your results by not taking those actions. You could be self-sabotaging yourself from getting the success you say that you want. If you’re not willing to do and take the actions necessary, it really means that you’re not really concerned about it all. Some people just believe that they’re entitled to the results they want. Taking action means that you must put in effort and the work required getting the results you desire. Some people procrastinate because they don’t believe in themselves or they don’t have a clear vision of what they’re trying to achieve. Whereas, others are in search for perfection and they hold themselves back from taking action. By wasting time you’re wasting money, resources, and the only time you’ve got. Time is not replaceable.

9 Powerful Habits of the High Performer

January 10, 2015 by Debra Kasowski Leave a Comment

I have always enjoyed studying people and performance. I love to learn about what makes them tick and what ticks them off? What is the trigger? How do they switch gears when things do not go as planned? What do they do differently that the average person?

I would like to consider myself a high performer but I also know that I can become more disciplined as sometimes those late nights do not lead to early morning starts. I love mornings but I can also get caught up in my work because I love it so much!

Think about the successful people in your life, what are their daily habits? How did they become successful?

Many people see the success and think it was handed to them on a silver platter. Here you go! I wish it was that easy but – it is not so!Waiter with empty silver tray

There is so much more that you do not see. What goes on behind closed doors…the long hours, missed vacations, and all the small daily sacrifices to reach their end goal.

Get Up Earlier than The Rest.

Prepare yourself for the day before everyone else is up. 5 am is a great start. Your body is for movement. Fit in some morning exercise at least 30 minutes. Eat breakfast. Read an industry related book or write in a journal for about 20 minutes. You may even consider meditation or prayer to clear your mind of any doubts or worries you may have. High performers are go-getters.

You can get a few more hours up on the world – watch your productivity soar. Why? You will feel stronger, more clear on what you need to do, your body is fueled and energy is up. You are in position to conquer the world.

Take 100% Responsibility for Your Life.

High performers do not make excuses for their actions. They own them and if something did not go as planned they look for a solution or admit their involvement. High performers do not complain or look to blame any one. They look for what they may have done to change the outcome or what their contribution was. There is no sense dwelling on something you have no control over as a root cause analysis does not change the outcome. Positive forward thinking builds momentum. It is an unshakeable attitude – an air of confidence that says – this is my life and I have choices.

Learn from Your Mistakes.

I know people who are afraid to try new things because they are perfectionists and are afraid of failure – perhaps you feel the same way. If you do not try new things, you are depriving yourself of a lifetime of new experiences and opportunities. There is no guarantee of success or failure without an attempt. What you think is playing it safe can actually be your greatest risk. Instead, look for the lessons and try to not make the same mistake twice.

Progress Before Perfection.

If you wait for everything to be perfect, you may never get started. Strive for your personal best. Don’t worry about what others are doing – they are not living your  journey. Stop comparing yourself to others and devaluing yourself.

Go the extra mile.Female Runner Winning Marathon

Work harder than the competition and deliver more than expected. Do what others do not do and you will be noticed and remembered. High achievers ensure they make an impact in the lives of others whether it be providing more value or helping them reach their goals.

Take time to learn more to earn more.

High performers do not watch a lot of television unless it is part of their work. According to some reported statistics collected by A.C. Nielsen Co. and reported by Norman Herr, PhD from California State University, Northridge on Television and Health, the average North American watches 4 hours a day of television (28 hours/week). To a high performer, time is money. Time is relationships. Time is education, knowledge, and experience. Time is health. The most shocking information I noted when reading Television & Health was that parents only have 3.5 minutes of meaningful conversation with their children a week. How are we as a society encouraging the high performers of the future?

You have the same amount of time as the next person to achieve success. What are you doing with the time you have? You can be reading and researching to learn more about your industry, and investing in yourself both professionally and personally. The more you learn and apply your learning the greater your earning potential.

Write down your goals.

Make it real. By putting your goals on paper and inking them, you are make more of a commitment. Keep your goals visible so they stay top of mind. Write down strategies that you plan to take to achieve them. This exercise will help you stay focused and more inspired to take action. Breaking down your goals makes them less overwhelming. High performers know that once a ball is in motion and action is taken. Momentum occurs.

Surround Yourself with Like-Minded People.

You are the average of the five people you surround yourself the most. You may have heard the phrase, “You become the company that you keep.” Stop and think about the people you spend the most time with. Eliminate or limit the interaction you have with toxic people and surround yourself with people who elevate you and want you to help you reach your goals. High performers are always stretching themselves by getting to know new people and learning new things. Positive environments fosters growth. Raise the bar!

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone.

Complacency is like the kiss of death. When you get to comfortable, you begin to resist growth and change. Change is progress. You may be afraid to take a risk. Remember the more knowledge or you have about a subject, the more competent and confident you feel. High performers know that risks can lead to great rewards. Do your homework and make your own decision about whether you want to go ahead with something. Trust your gut.

High performers create their own success through sacrifice, discipline, and hard work. They even ask for HELP! Look at the high achievers in your life. What are they doing?

If they can do it so can you!

The question is..what are you willing to do?

Is Work-Life Balance Possible for The Entrepreneurial Mom?

Work life balance. I have heard many people scoff at the term is as they believe there is no such thing.

They often tell me,  “Not in my life anyway.” I simply smile because I know that we all  make choices you the time we have. I have also learned that some of these choices that we make are not helping us get closer to the dreams we wish to achieve .

I believe that every  woman (moms included)  can achieve a sense of harmony doing the work that they do and in life they wish to create.

Considering that we all have the same amount of time, I have noticed that people spend a lot of time distracted by e-mail notifications, social media update and replies, chat conversations, and meetings that they really don’t need to be attending.

Time is a commodity.

Entrepreneurial women  are passionate about the work that they do . They are creative innovative individuals who want to make a difference with their products and services .   These women are often self proclaimed workaholics.

Although being a workaholic may seem productive  and profitable , it can be a detriment.

Work can become all-consuming and take over your life and your health – and even what matters – most your family.

The entrepreneurial mom focuses on what matters most while achieving her dreams .

Some of the tips and tricks for creating the harmony of work life balance  start with personal habits.

Take an inventory.  What is working ? What is not working ? What do you need to stop doing ?

Plan and prepare ahead.  You cannot skip this step!

Plan out your calendar of events for the next 4 to 6 months.  Make your family a priority by booking dates with your spouse or partner and each of your children individually.   What networking events do you plan to attend ? Mark them on the calendar.  Consider meal planning as well.

If you are familiar with the Pareto principle , you will learn that 80% of the results that you get will have to do with the 20% of time that you spend planning and preparing for your harvest.

Step out of your comfort zone.

Not stepping out of your comfort zone , is the number one thing that holds the entrepreneurial mom back from achieving their dreams.  They live their lives based on the fears of what ifs and guilt that they should have been doing something else to support their families .

This can be paralyzing – they just don’t know what to do.

I have been there and I have learned that reading books and listening to audios can help trigger thoughts and ideas but I learned that having accountability of a coach can make a big difference in having the support to take the next step.

Ask for the help you need and hire out what you can – involve your family members if you cannot take the step to hire out. Get them to takeout the trash, stamp the mail, run small errands, or clean the house so you can focus on what you need to do in order to reach your customers.

Make a choice to create a business and life that you love.

Embrace the concept of balance each day by creating habits that support your dreams.  After all, you are in charge!

Are You Intentionally Networking?

February 21, 2012 by Debra Kasowski 1 Comment

When you go to a networking event or social event, are you going there with intention to meet someone, build a relationship, and potentially introduce them into your business? When you go to an event, don’t stand there like a dear caught in headlights. Go and introduce yourself. I know it can be intimidating when you are not use to doing so. The more you step out of your skin into who you are meant to be, it will be amazing the connections and referrals that you will actually have.

Tips for Intentional Networking:

Act as if everyone in the room is someone you know. I learned this from my friend, Christine Cashen. She said that her grandmother had taught her that whenever you walk into a room if already  you already pretend that you are knowing everybody you will feel comfortable. It is easier to start introducing yourself to other people because soon enough you will know everyone in the room. That’s a fabulous tip!

Have your business cards with you so you can introduce yourself and be able to pass it on. Do not make that your first intent. Taking your business cards to and event is not like playing blackjack. It is not like seeing how many cards you can deal out. Give your card to people you connect with. These are people you feel have an alignment with or connect to.

Mark or make notes on the back of the card. Ask for permission to send out your e-zine. That is how relationships are formed.

The biggest thing is your Follow-up! Are you going to follow-up with a phone call or whether it be with your e-zine and connect with them to continue that relationship. Whether it be through email, phone call or in person, you want to continue to nurture the relationships around you.

Go with an intention. How many people do you want to meet? What type of people are you thinking of wanting to connect with?  Perhaps when you are in conversation you can say this is what I am looking for and this is some of the people I am  looking to connect with. Maybe they will know of someone and refer you.  Maybe they will refer you to someone. You never know where your connect will be.

They say there are six degrees of separation. In this new world of connectors, I am finding it three, four, or even one spot difference. It’s amazing how small the world is when you connect with like-minded people.

Your influence will continue to grow!

Have a great day and Be Rich from the Inside Out!
