To Agree or Disagree with Sheryl Sandberg – Facebook COO?

March 25, 2013 by Debra Kasowski Leave a Comment

There are many women in our lives who have influenced and shaped who we have become. For many of us, these people were our mothers, grandmothers, and women leaders. Leaders come in all shapes and forms. Some we know directly and others informally through books, magazines, and interviews.

The other night I watched Oprah’s Life Class interview with Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO, and author of Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead. I received the book at a birthday present but I have not yet cracked it open. The interview was very revealing of character and position. Sandberg was recently featured in Time Magazine with a title, “Don’t Hate Her Because She is Successful“.

Do you “hate” women because they are successful? Do you aspire to be like them or shy away in envy?

I believe women should be admired for their skills and talents. I do not think Sandberg’s positioning is about burning bras and creating a movement against men. Her position and my position as a business coach are about building women leaders and the right to achieve our own successes.

As women, we compromise ourselves by not allowing our voices to be heard. Your opinion and perspective can shift a culture and create a movement. In the interview, Sandberg talked about women “not sitting at the table” and getting involved in the discussion or planning. The women who grow their businesses or climb the corporate ladder are not the women who hide behind the computer no pun intended to Facebook. The women who are leaders support others through asking the right questions and challenging ideas and thoughts that do not align with a vision.

Secondly, it is okay to be yourself and know your priorities. Sandberg shared that she left the office at 5:30 p.m. so show could be home with her family and in bed by 9:30 p.m. because her children would be getting up in the morning. We can have it all but not always at the same time. I totally agree with this philosophy but many people use to tell me I could not have it all – at any time. I think that view has fuelled me in writing my books and juggling the kids activities. I do recognize when people state, “I do not know how you get so much done.”

I will share part of the secret – I choose to.

In my home, we talk about expectations, goal-setting, and shared household responsibilities. I do not need to seek martyrdom but do strive to maintain sanity.

We must “LEAN IN“. What would you do if you were not afraid? So many times we may hold ourselves back from achieving what we want due to our “mommy guilt” but who ever said that you were not doing well by your children for being an example of strong work ethic, voice of equality, and achievement. Who said that women were not allowed to be leaders or achieve their dreams?

I am more involved with my children than previous generations because I choose to. I am grateful for the opportunities that come my way because of the efforts of the previous generations and my own. I believe women can climb the corporate ladder, grow businesses, and raise the next generation of leaders in our community. We are leaders by example. We have a vision for our future and collaborate with others to get things done.

Yes, there are trade-offs and sacrifices for a greater and bigger life. There is nothing sweeter than creating a life you love – your way!

Congratulations Sheryl Sandberg on reaching out and creating a platform for women leaders!

Are You Ready to Celebrate Your Business and Life?

March 21, 2012 by Debra Kasowski 4 Comments

This is my milestone birthday month and I have to tell you it has been an incredible journey. For those who know me, I like to do things differently – I like to create experiences and I love to celebrate both big and small wins!

For my birthday, I planned a Hollywood Birthday Gala Fundraiser for the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. We had a red carpet, paparazzi and photo booth (BMP – Trevor Boller Photography) , Marilyn Munroe, and Oscar Cut-Outs. There was a fashion show by CapriceWest Consignment Store and Princess Florence Handbags & More display. Derks Formal Wear sponsored the men in my life with tuxedos! Incredible sponsorship and support!

Everyone was a celebrity as they walked the red carpet.

I are extremely grateful for all the donations, support, and all of those who came to celebrate that  night – WE SOLD OUT!

There was a brief moment in time I second guess whether or not I should even host the party. Maybe there was too little time!

When I started planning the event, I had people telling me the following:

  • Do you think people will come?
  • Do you think people will pay to come to your birthday?
  • Do you really think you can do it?

As I heard the chatter, my head began to spin. I had this idea in my head since I had a Hollywood 10th Birthday Party for my daughter a few years ago. We had so much fun; I thought I want a celebration just like that. Thankfully, I spoke to my web designer, Roger MacRae . In a short conversation, he reminded me of why I do things differently and how long it usually takes me to put together an event. In my mind, I could not understand why people would not want to come. Mindset plays a huge part of success – you need to believe!!! They did – not only to celebrate my birthday but to celebrate a cause in a positive atmosphere that created an unforgettable experience. So it got me thinking – brainstorming!

Lessons I had learned over the years that affect your business and even your life that relate to :

  1. Relationships are the cornerstone of your life. What happens when you do not water or prune a garden of weeds? It withers and becomes lifeless and dies- so too, do you relationships if you do not nurture them.  You must tend to them and watch them grow regularly.

TIP #1: You must have a regular presence online and offline and provide value (articles, quotes, or special reports) to the people in your network. Ezine, e-newsletters, direct mail, Facebook, Twitter, and phone calls are a few ways in which you can provide value and be the PRESENT to others.

     2.  Celebrate and help others live to their highest potential. You probably have met people that have so much going for them that they are totally oblivious to some of the skills and talents they possess. They are usually the people who say, “Oh, it’s nothing – I was just playing around.” We often see in others more than what they see in themselves. Remember when you support others in their dreams, they will also champion yours.

TIP #2: Provide testimonials or recommendations for others to use on their website or LinkedIn. Not only are you helping another people “stretch” into who they are meant to be but you are also being noted as the one providing it. If you know, like, and trust their work – let others know. Commenting on blog posts, Facebook messages, Tweets also helps build a rapport and increases your visibility. Would you want that?

    3.  Surround yourself with people who build you up and not the ones who break you down.

TIP #3: Choose to surround yourself with like-minded people who help you stretch and grow, support you, and encourage you to go after your dreams. You need to focus on what you truly want and learn to stay away from those bright shiny objects that take you off course.

  4. Share your dreams with others.

TIP #4: Let people you trust know about what your latest projects are and some of your goals or dreams. People cannot support you if they do not know what you need. People will be excited to support your dreams. Watch you dream explode into something bigger than you ever thought.

5. Try new things! Plan an event, host a blog talk radio show, start a membership and create a community, or create a vlog (Video Blog)!

TIP #5: Video is one of the most powerful tools in sharing your message with the world. Helps with your Google search rankings too. I was excited to watch video birthday messages on my Facebook Timeline. They mademy day even more memorable because people did some thing different – they stood out from the crowd! It  was inexpensive, timely, and had impact! By the way, I love reading every message. Make sure you wish your Facebook friends a Happy Birthday on their big day!

Stay focussed on what you want and be true to yourself. You already possess what you need to succeed!

My motto is “Do not let your greatest regret be that you never took action.” Seize the day! You only have one life to love!

An Awakening of Sorts

October 23, 2011 by Debra Kasowski Leave a Comment

Do you ever feel like you are doing things but you are not really sure if people are paying attention? This question sparked a very interesting conversation with several friends and colleagues. When you are posting in social media forums, do you know how many people are viewing or reading your comments. Do people see all of your efforts?

This week was packed with connecting with women changing the world in their businesses and really great conversations. At the Millionaire Woman Club, Lori Raudnask and Gail Martin spoke about The Patterns of the Sales Cycle and 30 Days to Social Media Success. We were working in our networking groups and people were commenting about my posts and videos. They were sharing that they really enjoyed them and how the tips helped them improve something in their businesses and life. Two days later at the FIERCE Woman of the Year Awards, I had several more people come and say the same. Today, the same was true and people wanted to learn more from me. Do you realize the impact that you may be having on others while you do your business?

People are noticing what you do and do not do. What makes you different from others? Think about businesses or programs you work with. Do you miss the phone call from the dentist checking to see how you are after your treatment or the calendar from your financial planner at the beginning of the year? One of my realtor’s gives out pumpkin pies at Thanksgiving to all of her clients – do you think she is making an impact and building relationships? You bet! The way you do things and how you do things can be great learning for others.

I called this an awakening because do not always know how many read my posts whether it be a blog or on social media. Maybe someone LIKED it or made a comment but how do I really know if someone out there is listening and learning. Even if this blog impacts one person it makes a difference.

Be consistent with what you do. Stay true to what matters most and who you are. People are paying attention to what you are doing. Let the ripple you create in the world spread. Continue to give of yourself, you may not know the impact it has in the world but I assure you someone out there needed to hear it.

I want to acknowledge some special people who have a huge heart and have helped raise funds for local Edmonton Schools through The Spirit of Christmas Fundraiser today.

Joanne MacDonald – Sunset Gourmet – The Onion Blossom Horseradish Dip is amazing! Brynda Roche – NuSkin – Increasing Vitality and beauty in the World, Michelle Weisgerber – Stella & Dot – accessorizing today’s modern woman, Maria Pereira – Unique Treasures of the World – the best kept secret to stay at home shopping – what a Christmas Stress Reducer, Jocelyn Adcock – Party Lite Candles – sharing the beautiful scents of Christmas, Rose Sandulescu – Beautiful Skin for Life – for making my hands extra smooth, Dela Doe-Demosse of SheMama Naturals for skin care for the body and sharing your beautiful smile, Andrea Holmstrom – Stampin’ Up for her unique Halloween and Christmas stampin’ crafts, Patty Price – Fifth Avenue Jeweller, for showcasing fine jewellery, Joanna Kissick – Gold Canyon/Tupperware – fulfilling many needs in kitchen and home, Tammy Ayer – Epicure Selections – cooking spices and herbs that make you tastebuds water, Kristy Yarmuch with Mary Kay accebting a woman’s beauty, Alya Goulko of Artistry – for introducing me to a LED light and mirrored lip gloss, Bonnie Haugen introducing the world to Simply You jewelry, Carly Slater for showcasing her photography – thanks for sharing your talents, Linda Hein for her beautiful Christmas wreaths, Jennifer Haas for the playfulness of Discovery Toys, Sheila Krivsky for Organo Gold – the hot choclate was absultely deliciious, Lee Politano – Help 4 You Skin Care, Cheryl Carnegie for Sweet Tweet Sugar & Gluten Free Shop, Tammy Burgardt with Norwex, Mar Robinson for jams, jellies, and quilts, and Mariana Konsolos of Princess Florence Handbags and More – what a genuine spirit and beautiful business owner stylin’ ladies for success, and Lisa Litwinski for her Today, I choose cards for setting a great intention for the day.

I want to especially thank Shannon Berry of Capital Concierge and her family for the unconditional pouring of heart and soul into this project. Thank you to all of the vendors and visitors who are helping local schools, you have big hearts and I so appreciate you!

Know this people are taking notice of what you are doing. Set yourself apart.

As the saying goes, “You get what you give.” Thank you for giving of yourselves and sharing your talents with the world. May you reap much success.
